How To: Make Your Own Plant Markers

Add a handmade touch to your garden (or your windowsill!) with these simple pyrography plant markers. They’re practical, personal, and a lovely way to keep track of what you’ve planted, especially if everything starts looking the same!

What You’ll Need

  • A wooden craft stick
  • Abranet sanding sheets
  • Pencil
  • Rubber (eraser)
  • Pyrography pen

Optional Items

  • Printed words
  • Carbon paper
  • Masking tape
  • Coloured pen

Step 1: Prepare Your Wood

Good preparation makes all the difference when it comes to pyrography. It helps your pen glide smoothly across the surface and gives a cleaner, more professional finish.

If you're using a craft stick, a light sanding should be enough. If the surface feels a little rough, start with a coarser grit like 240. Remember:

Lower numbers = rougher grit
Higher numbers = finer grit

Work your way up through 320, 400, and finish with 600 grit.

And when it feels smooth… give it one more sand! A well-prepared surface really does make burning easier.

Step 2: Write Your Plant Name

Lightly sketch your plant name onto the wood using a pencil.

This step is especially helpful if you're new to pyrography, as it gives you a guide to follow and the chance to tweak your design. If you make a mistake, no problem! Just rub it out and try again.

Hot tip: If you’re not keen on your handwriting, you can print your chosen words and transfer them onto the wood using carbon paper, masking tape and a coloured pen. If you're not sure how to do this, you can find out more here.

Step 3: Time to Burn

Once you're happy with your design, it’s time to bring it to life.

Carefully trace over your pencil (or transferred) lines with your pyrography pen. Take your time and let the pen do the work, there’s no need to rush.

Don’t worry about being perfectly precise. Any small wobbles or imperfections just add to the handmade charm!

And most importantly… remember to breathe.

Step 4: Add Extra Detail (Optional)

If you’d like to personalise your plant markers even more, now’s the time.

You could add small decorative elements like leaves, flowers, or simple borders. Keep it simple or go detailed, it’s completely up to you.

Before you seal your piece, ensure you remove any pencil marks that may still be showing.

Step 5: Seal Your Piece

Once you’re finished, apply a coat of Odie’s Oil or a finish of your choice.

This helps protect your design, especially if your markers will be used outdoors, and gives a subtle, finished sheen.

Finished!

You now have your very own plant markers — perfect for keeping track of your herbs, flowers, or veggies.

Practical, personal, and completely handmade!
