Creating Handmade Easter Decorations: Wooden Egg Workshop
By HeatherMay in Ripley is one of my favourite places to host creative workshops. It’s a space that feels instantly welcoming – full of inspiration, warmth, and creativity. From candle-making and pottery to jewellery and pyrography, it’s a true hub for anyone who loves making.
This weekend, I returned to the studio to host a wooden egg decorating workshop, just in time for Easter – and it was such a lovely afternoon.

Getting Started with Pyrography
This session was made up mostly of returning students, which created a relaxed and friendly atmosphere right from the start. We began with some simple pyrography warm-up exercises, helping everyone get comfortable with the tools and techniques.
Practising lines, dots, textures, and shading is always a great way to build confidence before starting the main projects.
"Excellent introduction to pyrography. The knowledge that Connie shows certainly helped me!!"

Decorating Flat Wooden Eggs
To ease into the workshop, we started with flat wooden eggs. I had prepared a selection of designs in advance, allowing everyone to focus on technique rather than worrying about what to draw.
This “warm-up” stage is always so effective. It helps everyone settle into the process and find their rhythm (with a few egg-related puns along the way – crackin’!).
Before long, the room became calm and focused. There’s something incredibly mindful about pyrography – the gentle movement, the quiet concentration, and the sense of being fully in the moment.
"Yet another fantastic class. Fully explained, help when needed. A relaxing session - but full of fun. Thank again, until next time." - Liz
Exploring Techniques and Texture
During the session, participants also experimented with different tips, including the knife point for added texture and line work.
Some loved the effect, while others preferred to stick with their usual techniques. That’s part of the beauty of these workshops – discovering what works best for you and developing your own style.

Creating 3D Wooden Easter Eggs
After a short break (and some well-earned cake), we moved on to the main project: 3D wooden eggs.
This stage can feel a little challenging at first. Working on a curved surface is very different from a flat one, and there were a few unsure moments. But together, we worked through how to transfer and adapt designs.
Once everyone got started, confidence quickly grew.
"Another great afternoon with Connie. She explained everything from start to finish. I had a lovely time making the eggs for Easter. Thank you, Connie." - Heather
Some participants chose classic Easter-themed designs, while others created something more personal. Watching each egg come to life – with detailed burning, shading, and even touches of watercolour – was incredibly rewarding.

Unique Handmade Easter Decorations
Every single egg turned out completely unique. From delicate botanical patterns to more intricate designs, the variety was beautiful.
It’s always amazing to see how the same tools and materials can produce such different results.
"Egg-cellent workshop! (couldn't resist the pun!) Really enjoyed trying new skills to build on my new pyrography obsession." - Claire

Finishing the Wooden Eggs
To complete the pieces, we applied a layer of melamine lacquer. This final step enhances the wood grain, deepens the colours, and protects the design.
It’s always a bit of a magic moment – when everything comes together and the finished piece really shines.
"Excellent workshop as always. Well taught - professional and very friendly. Looking forward to doing another one already." - Jane
A Relaxed and Creative Workshop
Spending time at By HeatherMay is always a joy. The space makes people feel instantly at ease, whether they’re experienced or trying pyrography for the first time.
The group brought such a warm and supportive energy, making the workshop feel relaxed, creative, and fun from start to finish.
"Another awesome craft class. Connie has such patience and makes it such fun. Bring on our next class! Fabulous!" - Amanda
By the end of the day, I left feeling so proud of my students and incredibly grateful. Workshops like these are a reminder that creativity isn’t just about the finished piece – it’s about the experience, the learning, and the enjoyment along the way.
Thanks again to Heather for hosting, and to everyone who came along and made the day so special. I hope you have a crackin' Easter!
