Decorate your own wooden Easter bunny for Spring using a pyrography pen and watercolours. This is a lovely, relaxing project that’s perfect for beginners and a great way to create a handmade seasonal decoration.
What You’ll Need
- A wooden bunny blank
- Abranet sanding sheets (240, 320, 400, and 600 grit recommended)
- Pencil
- Rubber (eraser)
- Pyrography pen
- Watercolours (optional)
- Melamine lacquer (for sealing)
Step 1: Prepare Your Wood
Good preparation makes all the difference when it comes to pyrography. It helps your pen glide smoothly across the surface and gives a cleaner finish.
Start sanding with a coarse grit like 240. Remember:
- Lower numbers = rougher grit
- Higher numbers = finer grit
Gradually work your way up through 320, 400, and finish with 600 grit.
When the wood feels smooth… sand it again! Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later.
Step 2: Draw Your Design
Lightly sketch your design onto the wood using a pencil.
This step makes burning much easier, especially if you're new to pyrography. It also gives you the freedom to adjust your design. Just rub it out and redraw until you're happy.
Step 3: Time to Burn
Once you're happy with your design, it’s time to start burning. Carefully burn over your pencil lines with your pyrography pen.
Don’t worry about being perfectly accurate. You can erase any leftover pencil marks afterwards. Small imperfections add character and adds to the handmade charm!
Take your time and enjoy the process - and remember to breathe!
Safety Tip
If you’re switching between tips on your pyrography pen, always make sure it has cooled down completely first.
This can take a moment, so it’s the perfect excuse to step away. Go on, pop the kettle on or enjoy a few mini eggs while you wait!
Step 4: Add Colour (Optional)
If you’d like to add colour using watercolours, make sure your burn lines are fully connected to stop paint bleeding. If there's gaps in your lines, the paint might try and bleed through.
I tend to use watercolour pencils as I find them easier to control. Gradually build the colour rather than applying too much at once. Lots of water will give you a pale colour. If you use less water, you'll get a much stronger, more vivid colour.
Step 5: Seal Your Piece
Once your paint is completely dry, apply a coat of melamine lacquer. This will protect your design, enhance the colours and add a subtle shine.
Finished!
You now have your very own handmade Easter bunny — perfect for decorating your home or gifting to someone special.
