My First Creative Craft Show in Exeter!

My First Creative Craft Show in Exeter!

Sharing the Art of Pyrography in the South West

September saw me heading to The Creative Craft Show in Exeter for the first time, and I think this might actually be the furthest south I’ve ever been! Another adventure for ConnieFlower, and another opportunity to introduce more people to the mindful art of pyrography.

Getting there was an adventure in itself. The drive was a long one, but I managed the entire journey without making a single stop! I'm not sure whether that's impressive or just stubbornness, haha. Either way, I made it with a belly full of sweets!

A Little Exploring

I stayed in a lovely place called Topsham, which made a nice base for the trip. While I was in the area, I took the opportunity to explore a little, enjoy some lovely fish and chips, and have a walk along the coast at Exmouth.

There was also some very posh complimentary cheese and sourdough crackers in the fridge where I was staying. When in Devon, apparently!

It's always nice to squeeze in a little exploring when travelling for work, especially when I'm somewhere new. I still have a desk job to keep my kitties fed and a roof over our heads, so most of my annual leave goes towards attending shows like this. I try to turn these trips into little working holidays where I can!

Autumn, Christmas and a Few Clever Sausages!

The pyrography Make & Take drop-in sessions went down really well, with visitors joining me to create their own autumnal and Christmas decorations.

As it was still September, some people weren't quite ready to think about Christmas and opted for autumn-inspired designs instead. Others were already embracing the festive spirit and chose Christmas designs.

Then there were the clever sausages who decided to burn an autumnal design on one side and a Christmas design on the other. Two decorations in one! They can enjoy them throughout autumn before flipping them over for Christmas. I do love a bit of creative thinking!

The Make & Take sessions are all about giving people the chance to have a go at wood burning in a relaxed, friendly environment. You don't need to be artistic or have any previous experience. With a few simple templates, some guidance and a little patience, you can create something lovely to take home with you on the same day.

It's always a pleasure to see people settle in, get stuck into their designs and discover just how enjoyable pyrography can be.

Meeting New Faces in Exeter

One of the loveliest things about visiting somewhere new is meeting new people, and Exeter certainly didn't disappoint! Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, and it was lovely to chat to visitors, answer questions about pyrography and introduce people to a craft they might never have tried before.

I was told it may have been around nine years since pyrography was last featured at this show, so it was particularly rewarding to bring it back and give people the opportunity to have a go for themselves.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by my stand, watched a demonstration, had a chat, asked questions or chose to sit with me and burn some art. Whether you were completely new to pyrography or already familiar with the craft, I really appreciate you taking the time to come and see what it's all about.

A Slightly Smaller Show

The Exeter show was on a smaller scale compared with Birmingham, which I have to admit was a bit of a relief! Craft shows can be quite full-on, especially when you're running your own stand, demonstrating your craft and chatting to visitors all day. The smaller setting felt much more relaxed and less overwhelming.

Although, I definitely got through more sample pieces than usual during the quieter mornings! There's always something to be getting on with when you've got a pyrography pen in your hand.

I was also lucky enough to have some familiar faces nearby. My fellow stallholders and longtime show friends, Hannah from Submerge Art, and Tracey and Steve from Craftworx, were there too. It's always lovely to catch up with people you know when you're away from home, and having friendly faces around makes such a difference.

I also had the pleasure of meeting members of Woodbury Woodturners. Of course, I couldn't leave without buying something, could I? I came away with some teeny tiny turned mushrooms, which are absolutely adorable!

And a big thank you for gifting me with a Grinch Christmas decoration, too! That was such a lovely surprise and very much appreciated.

Until Next Time, Exeter!

As a one-woman business, I do all the making, preparing, packing, travelling and setting up myself, so these events take a fair bit of work behind the scenes. But getting to share something I love with other people makes it all worthwhile.

My first visit to Exeter was a lovely experience, and I'm grateful to everyone who helped make it so welcoming. Thank you for your kindness, your curiosity and your support.

Now, I think I deserve a little rest after all that driving! Good preparation though, as it's Glasgow next! See you at the SEC from Thursday 22nd - Sunday 25th October.

Diolch yn fawr, thanks again for having me, Exeter!
