Wooden Jewellery & Keyrings: Pyrography Workshop at By HeatherMay
It's always lovely to welcome both familiar faces and new makers to a workshop, and my recent Pyrography Earrings & Keyrings Workshop at By HeatherMay in Ripley was no exception.
The workshop brought together a wonderful mix of returning students and beginners, creating a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere from the very start. It was particularly lovely to meet Leigh and Kim, who had travelled quite a distance to join us after discovering me at The Creative Craft Show in Birmingham. Knowing that people were willing to make the journey to continue their creative journey made the day even more rewarding – thank you both!

Building Confidence with Pyrography
We began the session by revisiting the fundamentals of pyrography, giving everyone the opportunity to practise different marks, textures, and shading techniques before starting their final pieces.
For returning students, this was a chance to refine existing skills and experiment with new effects. For beginners, it provided the confidence needed to get comfortable with the tools and discover just how versatile wood burning can be.

As always, it wasn't long before conversations flowed, ideas were shared, and the room settled into that familiar creative buzz that makes workshops so enjoyable... then it all went quiet as the real concentration kicked in!
Designing Unique Wearable Art
Once everyone was ready, attention turned to designing and creating personalised earrings, necklace pendants, and keyrings.
The variety of designs produced throughout the day was fantastic. Some participants chose delicate floral motifs, transforming wooden blanks into beautiful necklace pendants and earrings inspired by nature. Claire explored geometric patterns, creating contemporary pieces with striking visual impact.

There were also plenty of whimsical and imaginative designs appearing on keyrings, each reflecting the personality and creativity of its maker. One of the joys of pyrography is that even when everyone starts with the same materials, every finished piece becomes completely unique.
Creativity, Experimentation and Inspiration
Throughout the workshop, participants experimented with different techniques to add depth, contrast, detail, and touches of colour to their work.
Watching confidence grow over the course of the morning is always one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. Returning students built on skills they had developed in previous workshops, while newcomers quickly discovered that pyrography is far less intimidating than it first appears.

The supportive atmosphere encouraged everyone to try new ideas, share techniques, and celebrate each other's progress. It was wonderful to see makers inspiring one another and gaining confidence as their creations came to life.
Bringing the Pieces to Life
As the designs developed, the wooden blanks began to transform into finished accessories that could be worn, gifted, or used every day.

The floral pendants and earrings showcased beautiful detail and delicate linework, while the geometric designs demonstrated how effective simple patterns can be when combined with pyrography techniques. The collection of keyrings ranged from playful and quirky to elegant and refined, creating a wonderful showcase of individual creativity.
Each piece told its own story, making the finished collection as diverse as the people who created it.
A Wonderful Day at By HeatherMay
By the end of the workshop, every participant left with a collection of handmade accessories and the satisfaction of having created something truly personal.
